Dé mob wife aesthetic

The mob wife aesthetic

It is already the trend of 2024: the mob wife aesthetic. Where we mainly went for minimalist in recent years, 2024 screams prints, gold jewelry and (faux fur) fur coats. Where does this trend come from and why is there suddenly talk of cultural appropriation?

Netflix & chill
In recent years, we have been given a glimpse into the lives of many different people and groups. Including mafia women. In many films and series, mafia women are the women we look up to. They are beautiful, caring and lead an exciting life. Mafia women from films and series are the great inspiration for the mob wives trend. Examples include Carmela Soprano from The Sopranos, Ginger McKenna in Casino and Elvira Hancock from Scarface.

Mafia culture is a source of inspiration
Mafia culture has always been a fashion inspiration for many, thanks in part to the popular series The Sopranos, Goodfellas and The Godfather. The women in these series often stand out because of their exuberant clothing style. But the tough attitude is also important. The clothing style that fits the mob wife trend is the more the better. This style was also seen a lot in the eighties and nineties.
Cultural appropriation?
What some see as a new fun TikTok trend, others experience as cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation occurs when you use or adopt elements from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect that culture. For example , Ang Ela uses TikTok to say that she finds the mob wife trend an insult to Italian culture. According to her, most people who participate in the trend do not even know the basic principles of her culture.
Your own touch
So we totally agree that you should stay true to yourself and not adapt to a culture you have no knowledge of. But, Carmela Soprano does inspire us. Let's be honest, a pair of big gold earrings on a boring day at the office or a leopard print when visiting grandma, just makes our day more fun.
