Clothing choices and temperatures

In the Netherlands, nothing is as changeable as the weather. It can sometimes be difficult to choose your perfect outfit. Layers are the perfect solution. We are going to explain how you can best layer your outfit (because that is what it is called these days)

A good start is half the work

Choosing the right base layer is pretty essential, because it’s the layer that keeps you warm all day long. But it’s also important to remember that while you’re covered in layers during the day, once you’re inside somewhere warm for a nice cup of coffee, you’ll be taking those layers off again. So make sure your base layer is as cute as it is covered in layers. We think a classic tee and leather pants or vintage jeans are the perfect base layer for your outfit. The comfy fit of the top and leather pants peek out from under your layers and give your outfit that little bit of extra spice. Also, don’t forget to wear comfortable socks. Body heat is released through your feet, so keeping them warm in cool socks is rule number one when it comes to layering your outfit.

The next step: the middle layer

If you’re sticking to a turtleneck and trousers combo, a crisp white shirt or an oversized blouse in a trendy pattern is a great in-between layer. The turtleneck will pop out at the neck, while the shirt adds a pop of colour to your layered look. The next step is to add a trendy blazer that will streamline and tailor the look, making you look less like a bulky Michelin Man and more like a refined fashionista. A great alternative to a shirt is a dress, long or short (make sure your tights are warm), both work well as the base layer will work hard to keep you warm. Pair your dress with over-the-knee boots and a waistcoat or blazer and you’ve got a great layered outfit. And if you find yourself really cold in winter, a chunky knit cardigan or knit is the way to go! A cardigan looks great layered over a turtleneck, while a jumper is perfect layered over a collared shirt for an Anne-Fleur look.

The almost-last step

Of course, no outfit is complete without a beautiful coat. These items are really what makes fashion so great! A good coat is an absolute wardrobe must for every woman because it makes such a statement about who you are. From a beautiful timeless cream-colored trench coat that exudes a refined style to a (leather) jacket that has a cool and casual look, making you completely on-trend. A mid-length coat or teddy coat will come in handy on your wardrobe. There are endless options when it comes to coat styles and they all say something about your individual style. When styling your coat with a layered look, it is important to look at the proportions of your outfit. If you are wearing a long dress or shirt, your outfit will look better layered with a long coat, because a short or cropped coat can cut you off in the wrong place and make you look shorter than you are. However, a cropped jacket looks fantastic over a combination of high-waisted jeans and a cropped sweater or top, because the high-waisted pants give you the illusion of super long legs!

The final step: ACCESSORIES!

Fall and winter is definitely the season for hats. We love a cute beanie to finish off an outfit, and they look so great layered. Add a pop of color to those dark winter days with a brightly colored beanie. Trust us, everyone looks great in a beanie! A chic beret adds a touch of class and an Emily in Paris vibe to your look without having to try too hard. If you’re more of a casual girl, a bucket hat or a cool sports cap are definitely for you! These types of hats look so cool styled with a puffer jacket, casual hoodie, high-waisted denim jeans & sneakers. Scarves are another favorite for layering. A scarf with a bold pattern will keep you warm and is a great winter must-have. Last but certainly not least, add some jewelry to your outfit! It might not keep you warm, but it sure adds style to your outfit! Continue the layering vibe by layering a few necklaces of varying lengths to create your own necklace party. If you’re wearing gloves, you may want to leave the rings at home, but you can still go all out on the bracelets and earrings.
